Ceramics have been produced in Sicily for more than a thousand years and each of the various peoples and cultures that settled on the island created their own unique shapes and decorative patterns. Erice, Caltagirone, Santo Stefano di Camastra and Burgio are just some of the many sites across the island that produce ceramics today. In Valledolmo, Vincenzo Zammito has been producing hand-decorated ceramic lemmi, plates and various other objects since 2002. The lemmi (typical Sicilian containers in the shape of a truncated cone) are the result of a process that begins with clay, then processed until it can be poured into moulds, and ends with the glazing. Each piece is hand-finished, dried and fired in a kiln at a temperature of 1000 °C. The product is glazed by dipping it into a liquid bath to create a homogeneous surface on which the decorations can be applied. Next comes the final firing in high-temperature kilns to enable the fusion of the enamel and the bright colours.
